As we embark on the first day of this new school year, the Communications Committee is excited to introduce you to THE EDGE, a newsletter to be released five times annually that will honor group and individual accomplishments, preview upcoming events, share district news, and essentially celebrate what makes Edgemont special. We look forward to bringing the next publication to you in late fall, when cooler temperatures will hopefully be more than just wishful thinking! Until then, enjoy this school year, on THE EDGE!

Several Edgemont School District students were recognized by the Edgemont Board of Education recently for their participation in the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) top annual showcase, which took place in Rochester, N.Y., in December.

“This is the top musical honor our state can offer,” said Brittany Robinson Chen, the District’s fine and performing arts teacher leader. “All-State auditions are rigorous and only the absolute top musicians from across the state are selected as participants or alternates.”

The NYSSMA Winter All-State Ensembles and Conference brings together students, clinicians, and educators from across the state for an intensive weekend of music-making. Students are chosen for All-State performance ensembles based on their NYSSMA Solo Festival Audition from the previous spring.

To be selected, students must have achieved a rating of 100 on their solo, scales and sight reading. The Board of Education praised the students at its Jan. 10 meeting.

Edgemont High School junior Evan Merzon (clarinet) and senior Ethan Thomas (bass clarinet) played in the Symphonic Band. Senior Elizabeth Kim (violin) and junior Augie Cai (trumpet) were chosen as alternates for the Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band, respectively.

 Chaemin (Joseph) Lim

High School senior Chaemin “Joseph” Lim and Greenville Elementary School fifth grader Aria Wang were among 20 students across the state chosen to have their pieces performed in the Young Composers Showcase. Lim's composition, "Piecemeal Paces," called for a large ensemble of wind, string, and percussion musicians. Wang wrote her composition, “Moonlight Mountain,” for solo piano

"Being recognized for participation in the NYSSMA Showcase is a wonderful honor. We are very proud of these students," said Dr. Jeanette Baubles, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

“Help me celebrate this wonderful expression through music,” said Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton. “Five of our students have demonstrated superior talent during the NYSSMA competition. These students are wonderful ambassadors for our school district. Bravo to Evan, Ethan, Elizabeth, Augie, Joseph and Aria, and all those who helped shape these young musicians and composers – parents, guardians, and teachers!”

Edgemont High School juniors and seniors who excel in Spanish classes are looking forward to practicing the language in the Dominican Republic.

In February, 28 students, mostly in the top levels, 4 and 5, will travel to the Caribbean nation to meet with their counterparts at Padre Emiliano Tardiff School, a private school in the northern city of Santiago de Los Caballeros.

“We want them to make meaningful connections with the Dominican students and hopefully spark friendships that will last long beyond the trip,” said Edgemont Spanish teacher Jedd Chesterson, who organized the trip. The students will travel with four chaperones during winter recess, the last week in February.

Students and teachers from both schools have already been in contact. The schools have swapped videos in which students and teachers each offer greetings in the other school’s language.

“As you can see, all my students are so motivated,” Neix Santana, head of the foreign language department at Padre Emiliano Tardiff School, says in that school’s video. “They are all excited because you are coming in February.”

Pre-pandemic, Chesterson took students to Spain every few years. The trip to the Dominican Republic, where Chesterson attended college and lived for a year, will immerse students in Latin American Spanish, which is more prevalent in the New York area than the Spanish spoken in Spain.

“They will learn about a culture that is right here in front of them,” Chesterson said.

With 1.3 million residents, Santiago is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic, after Santo Domingo, the capital, which has 3 million residents. Edgemont students will take part in activities in both cities.
